Jesus, the Lion of Judah, is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Though he is all-powerful, he is also extremely loving and gentle. I wanted to capture both of these aspects of Christ’s character within this drawing of him as the Lion of Judah.

Artist’s Reflection:

“See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals. Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne…” (Revelation 5:5-6)

Jesus is both the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the Lamb of God. He is both power and humility; strength and gentleness; justice and grace. In this drawing I wanted to capture both his strong attributes and his gentle attributes in one image. In my own life, I know Jesus’ possesses the following characteristics:

Jesus is omnipotently powerful:

“Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” (Psalm 147:5)

Jesus is also gentle as a Lamb:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29)

He is infinitely strong:

“One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.” (Psalm 62:11-12)

And his love reaches to the heavens:

“Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” (Psalm 36:5)

Jesus is full of justice:

“Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep.” (Psalm 36:6)

But he is also full of grace and truth:

“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17)

These Lion of Judah drawings were featured on the covers of Geoff Waugh’s Lion of Judah series of books. The books describe the titles, reign, life, death, resurrection and Spirit of Jesus. Please see The Renewal Journal website for more information on the books.
