“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:17-18)
God desires for all people to be saved from their sins and from hell by repenting (turning away) from their sins and by placing faith in Jesus as their personal Savior. God takes no pleasure in seeing sinners suffer the painful consequences of their sin but desires all people to turn to him in repentance (Ezekiel 33:11).
Any ideas we have about condemnation and hell must be viewed through the light that God earnestly desires people not to be condemned but to be saved. We must also take into account that Jesus willfully submitted himself to suffering a brutal death in our place in order to make reconciliation with God possible for us–so great is his love for us.
“[God is]…not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)
“God…wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men…” (1 Timothy 2:3-6)
