Freycinet National Park is home to Wineglass Bay and “The Hazards”, a small, iconic mountain range resting between Coles Bay and Wineglass Bay. The rocky coastline around Coles Bay is a photographer’s delight with its unobscured view of the Hazards and beautiful sidelight at sunrise and sunset.

Photographer’s Reflection:

“In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

One evening, during a trip to Freycinet National Park, Tasmania, I had my heart set on shooting sunset at the Hazards. My camera was positioned southward toward the Hazards, so I wasn’t watching the actual sunset happening 90 degrees to my right.

Although I had persisted long to capture the exact shot I wanted, it just wasn’t working. I was a bit frustrated, especially because the lighting was exquisite that evening.

Then all of a sudden I heard my family shout,“Hey Becky! Look at this sunset!”

I wheeled around and saw the incredible sunset in this photo. I had NO time to be picky about compositions. I only had enough time to turn the tripod around and shoot. Instantly I regretted wasting my whole evening in futile attempts to capture a scene that was never going to be as magnificent as the sunset which had been unfolding the entire time to my right.

When I think back on this experience, I cannot help but remember all of the times in my life where I really wanted something, but God did not allow me to have it because he had a much better plan for me.

God is benevolent and loving; he always has our best interests at heart.

”The LORD is good to all, he has compassion on all he has made” (Psalm 145:9).

But in order to live in the fulness of God’s blessing and his perfect plan for our lives, we must give ourselves and our entire lives to him. This requires us to trust him and to trust that he knows what is best for us.

I’m never afraid to surrender myself to God because I know his plan for my life is much better than mine.
