“The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity.
The seas have lifted up, LORD, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea–the LORD on high is mighty.
Your statues, LORD, stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days.”
The 5m (16.5′) waves striking the rocks in this photograph so captivated me that I was completely distracted from noticing the rain squall quickly approaching me from behind. I had just fully set up this shot when big, heavy drops of rain began to fall upon me and my camera. I had left my backpack with all of my rain gear in it a short distance away, so I had to quickly detach my camera from the tripod and make a dash for my rain coat and the water proof dry sacks.
Although I took extreme care, I must have accidentally nudged the focus ring on my camera without noticing it during my scramble to get everything protected from the rain. Little did I know, as I raced the rising sun and the rapidly advancing squall which would soon eclipse its ethereal light, that I was shooting the entire session slightly out of focus.
Oh, the terrible disappointment over my foolish blunder! Usually I do double safety checks on all my settings out in the field, but this time I was so time compressed that I had not! The lack of focus was not apparent when it was blown up on my camera’s LCD screen, but as soon as I got it up on the large computer screen it was all too apparent to me! My heart sank, knowing it would only ever reproduce well in small sizes.
BUT…I actually really love this shot. I love the magnificence of the brilliant light shining through the mighty waves, which remind me of Psalm 93 (above).
In the end, I decided to put it up on my website for others to enjoy, even though it is far from being technically perfect. I do admit I’m only human, just like everybody else, but I hope that doesn’t get in the way of people appreciating this awesome sight.
