2) How Can I Know If God Is Real?

“‘You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the LORD…” (Jeremiah 29:13-14)

“The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18)

Absolute truth evidences itself. For instance, the law of gravity is true. Gravity evidences itself when we throw a ball into the air and it comes back down. Note that even though gravity is an invisible force, we constantly exercise our faith in it.

The same is true with God. God is real, and even though he is invisible, his existence is evidenced through what is visible, for example, his Creation.

“…what may be known about God is plain to them [us], because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse [Creation clearly testifies of the Creator; therefore, men have no excuse for not believing in God].” (Romans 1:19-20)

However, the greatest way God evidenced himself was by clothing himself in human flesh and living among us as the Person of Jesus Christ. Thankfully, the life of Jesus has been accurately recorded in the New Testament of the Bible, which we can read for ourselves (www.biblegateway.com):

“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son [Jesus], whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1:1-3)

“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form..” (Colossians 2:9)

Jesus proved that he was God through the miracles he did, his power over nature, his power over the devil and his power over death. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). God continues to evidence himself today as he works in and through his people. He transforms their broken, sinful lives into healed, holy lives. Jesus also continues to perform miracles and healings through his people today, just as he did through his disciples. (*As a word of caution, this doesn’t mean that every supernatural occurrence is from God, as the devil also exists and sometimes tries to counterfeit God’s superior power). (Please see: 13) Do Miracles Really Happen? and Salvation Testimonies to read personal accounts of miracles Jesus has done in peoples’ lives today).

It is greatly encouraging to know that God desires to make himself known to us and to bring us into a loving, personal relationship with himself. God wants you to know him and to personally experience him. He wants to reveal himself to you. (See “Message”)

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out to him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.” (Acts 17:24-27)

Pray that God will reveal himself to you. Believe what he says in the Bible because his words are more firm and trustworthy than the material universe, for Jesus says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35).

Exercise your faith in what the Bible says and expect God to evidence himself to you because he is real, he hears our prayers and he answers them when we pray in accordance with his will.

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of him.” (1 John 5:14-15)

Jesus Christ claimed to be God incarnate. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the greatest single evidence of the existence of God. This video examines the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ (56:22).
