Badlands National Park is located in the Great Plains in South Dakota, USA, and is most noted for its geological features and rich fossil beds. The Badlands are made up of the beautiful striped hills you see in this photograph. These stripes are layers of sedimentary rocks that have been eroded away by water over many years. They contain sandstones, mudstones, limestones and even volcanic ash. The vast Badlands appear abruptly out of the vast prairies of the Great Plains and are home to bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep and the endangered Black-footed Ferret.
