The narrow leaved purple coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) is native to Minnesota and prefers sandy prairies. It has long been used medicinally both topically and internally for many different ailments including immune system support, swellings and distemper in horses.
This echinacea was growing along the St. Louis River in Jay Cooke State Park in Minnesota’s northeast. Jay Cooke State Park is one of Minnesota’s most popular parks, particularly because of its beautiful 13 mile (21 km) rocky gorge and swinging bridge. The St. Louis River rushes through the jagged slate, creating beautiful rapids and white water. The St. Louis River is a root beer brown color from the tannin coming from pine trees.
