Wellington Park contains a large network of walking tracks and fire trails that not only provide access to Kunanyi / Mt. Wellington but also to other mountains, such as Collins Bonnet and Collins Cap. My personal favourite mountain in the Wellington Range is Collins Bonnet because it provides spectacular views of the Huon Valley, the Derwent Valley, Cathedral Rock and the surrounding mountains.

Photographer’s Reflection:
“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah” (Psalm 62:5-8)
Bushwalking up a mountain might not be everybody’s idea of a day of rest, but it certainly is mine. Ever since I was a little girl I loved to get away from the presence of people and surround myself in God’s Creation. I still often retreat into the wilderness to spend time with the Lord and to get away from all the busyness and distractions of life.
There’s a wonderful network of bushwalking and fire trails through the Wellington Range behind Hobart. The great thing about Hobart is that within 15 minutes of the CBD, you’re in the bush, and within an hour’s or two bushwalk you are in the silence of the wilderness.
I was going through a particularly wearing season in my life, and so I decided to take a day of rest in the mountains and explore a few new wild places. I didn’t really have a plan, so I went wherever my feet carried me. I soon found myself on top of Trestle Mountain, which is more of a mountain bump than a mountain. It is situated behind Collins Bonnet, the stunning mountain behind Hobart’s iconic Kunanyi / Mt. Wellington.
From the fire trail it was only 20 minutes of steep scrambling to get the top of Trestle Mountain. Like Collins Bonnet, it had absolutely gorgeous views in every direction. I was so captivated by the view in this photo that I ran out of time to explore all of the other potential shots from the summit.
I stayed on the top of Trestle Mountain for several hours, watching the sun beams pierce through the clouds and dance around on the flanks of distant mountains as the wind blew the clouds along.
As always, I was reluctant to leave, but thankfully God had blessed me with some solace and rest in his presence on top of that silent mountain. I returned rested, refreshed and restored in the presence of the Lord.
“I lift up my eyes to the hills–where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip–he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you–the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm–he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121)
