The Aurora Australis appears over Tasmania, but what causes it?
The sun releases particles of plasma (which we call “solar wind”) through sunspots and coronal holes. They strike the earth’s magnetosphere at hundreds of km/s. Contained within the plasma are electrons. When these electrons collide with the gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere it ‘excites’ them into a higher energy state. When they move back down to their natural energy state, they emit a photon of light, which becomes the aurora. Collisions with oxygen produce green and yellow auroras while collisions with nitrogen produce pink, red, purple and blue auroras.
The sun goes through an 11 year cycle of solar maximum and solar minimum. During solar maximum there are more solar flares, resulting in a higher frequency of stronger auroras. Hobart, Tasmania, is at 42 degrees south latitude and typically experiences the Aurora Australis at least several times or more a year, dependent upon the solar cycle. Tasmania has also got some of the darkest skies in the world, especially when facing south of Hobart, so we are blessed to have fantastic views of the Southern Lights.
A “corona” aurora is when the aurora is directly above you (not at the horizon) and you are looking straight up into the aurora.

I absolutely LOVE corora auroras! However, this photograph is, by far, more special to me. It was the first time I picked up my camera to photograph after suffering a very severe vaccine injury to the Pfizer covid vaccine. It had been nearly four years since I had been capable of taking a real photograph. I nearly went blind due to complications, so this photograph means so much more to me than just a “cool shot”.
I did not want to take the Pfizer covid vaccine, but I was pressured into taking it on June 1, 2021, in order to continue my volunteer ministry to a high-risk people group in a high-risk environment. I have been in Emergency / paramedics seven times with suspected heart attacks and hundreds of severe neurological issues that left me bedridden in sensory deprivation (in order to dampen the nerve torture) for nearly 2.5 years. Some of the severe symptoms resulted in multiple cardiac arrhythmia and blood pressure issues, semi and full paralysis of breathing and swallowing reflex, semi and full paralysis of the lower half of my body, momentary blindness and many other symptoms. I have seen 3 cardiologists, 2 immunologists and a neurologist as well as about two dozen other doctors, ophthalmologists, Emergency doctors and nurses. They all unanimously agree I suffered a severe vaccine injury to the Pfizer covid vaccine but have been unable to get to the bottom of what it did to my body or how to treat me. My body rejected all medications they tried in order to lessen my suffering.
I nearly went blind due to complications from Pfizer, but God graciously saved the eyesight of his artist. By God’s grace and according to God’s promise, he is healing me, much to the delight and surprise of the doctors who said I would never recover. Due to the severity of the vaccine’s impact on my brain and eyes, I have not been able to do any artwork or photography (or leave the house) until very recently (4.5 years later). Only because of Jesus, my Good Shepherd, have I survived and found sufficient strength, comfort and peace to endure and to come through this extremely severe trial he has sovereignly allowed into my life for his own, good purposes. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). I am still healing, and I am still coming through. I am slowly resuming my art ministry and telling of all God’s goodness to me through the valley of the shadow of death. In faith, and as I continue to heal, I look forward to additionally resuming my wilderness photography ministry.
