Horsetail Falls is a large, beautiful seasonal waterfall located on Mt. Owen in the small town of  Gormanston, just outside Queenstown on Tasmania’s West Coast region. Thankfully, it rains a lot on the West Coast, so the waterfall is often running, especially in the rainier winter months. There is a short, easy walking track leading to a lookout of Horsetail Falls, but it can also clearly be seen from the Lyell Highway, where my photo was taken.

It had been raining all day, and the last thing I expected was for the thick clouds to part at sunset. As I was driving to my camp spot, the clouds began to lift off of Mt. Owen, so I thought I might wander down to the Horsetail Falls lookout. The intense orange sunset colours through the parting rainclouds were completely unreal, even unearthly. I regret that I didn’t have multiple cameras at the time because the lighting was so phenomenal that I missed a number of other great shots in other directions in order to take this one. In this photograph I have removed the sunset colour in order to emphasise the ethereal mist lifting off of Mt. Owen as Horsetail Falls cascades down below.
