We want to be in control, but sometimes situations in our lives are completely out of our control. We must choose to entrust ourselves and our situations into God’s sovereign hands instead of being overcome with anxiety or resorting to manipulation. Trusting in God is our place of perfect peace, for he loves us and promises to work all things together for the good of those who love him (Romans 8:28).

“But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hands…” (Psalm 31:14-15)
We want to be in control. It’s our human nature. We want to control our situations and even control people in order to make things go our way.
But our way is not necessarily God’s way.
If our faith and trust in God is immature, relinquishing our control of things to God can make us feel insecure, afraid or upset. And sometimes situations are totally out of our control. Perhaps we have offended somebody and they refuse to reconcile with us. Perhaps we have been falsely accused and condemned. Perhaps our teenager has rebelled and run to the world. Perhaps we have lost our job or our spouse. All of these “out-of-control” things can cause us a great deal of anxiety.
However, we have a sovereign God who has promised us in Scripture that he, “…works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will…” (Ephesians 1:11).
Knowing this allows us to rest in the fact that, in reality, NOTHING is EVER out of control; in Scriptural fact, EVERYTHING is ALWAYS under God’s sovereign control.
Furthermore, we know from the Scriptures that God sees everything and intimately knows everything about us and our situations.
“O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
You hem me in–behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?…All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.” (Psalm 139:1-7, 16-18)
Not only does God have knowledge about our situations, but he also truly cares about us and our situations as a loving Father. The Bible tells us to, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
Furthermore, no matter what happens to us, God will always turn it around for our good; we never need to be scared.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
God is in full sovereign control over all of history, over every person, over every spiritual being, and he is working out absolutely everything in conformity to the purpose of his will. God is fully omniscient of our situations and fully omnipotent in them. Better still, God is benevolent and loving toward us and powerfully acts on our behalf. He genuinely cares and understands us and our situations better than we understand them. His eternal purpose to conform us to the likeness of Christ and to bring us into his glory is absolutely certain.
Why, then, do we not relinquish our control of our lives into his loving hands and just trust him??
Relinquishing control forces us to trust God and to trust in his benevolent character and to trust in his Word.
How foolish we are when we think we can do a better, wiser job of governing our own lives and working out our situations than God!
Therefore, let us take these truths to heart, and leave our entire lives and all of our situations in his loving hands.
God please grant us the faith and courage to leave our entire lives and every one of our situations in your hands. We commit these things to you and trust that you love us, that you know everything and that you will certainly work all of these things out for our own good and in conformity to the purpose of your will. God we relinquish our control to you right now, and we release all of our anxiety to you now. We trust you, and we leave everything in our loving hands. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
“Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth. I hate those who cling to worthless idols; I trust in the LORD. I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. You have not handed me over to the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place…But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hands…” (Psalm 31:5-8, 14-15)
