There comes a time in life where we have no other choice but to walk by faith. This is where our knowledge of the Scriptures must transcend the theoretical and step into the realm of the experiential. Religiosity is powerless to help us walk above the waves. Only wholly trusting in Jesus gives us the power to walk on water. Ours is a Relationship of trust in a faithful Person, not faith in a Religion about a Person.

Artist’s Reflection:

“We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7)

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

There are scary times in our lives when God takes us through things we have never been through before, into deep darkness and into the unknown. Undoubtedly, the scariest of these times is when we face death. However, God has promised all those who believe in him:

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” (Psalm 23:4)

and

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

(See “Message“)

When we are walking through things we have never walked through before, we are forced to walk by faith. We can look to the promises in Scripture (Psalm 119:25) and we can fix our hearts and eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2), but our hearts must also fully trust in God (Psalm 28:7). The Scriptures and our past experiences of God’s faithfulness tell us everything is going to be OK as we are walking into the unknown, but it is a test of our faith–like walking on water. (Read Matthew 14:22-33). “We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Thankfully, his presence is constantly with us no matter what we go through. “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

“When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.” (Joshua 3:2-4)
