God desires a loving, personal relationship with each one of us. Sadly, however, we are eternally separated from him because we have all sinned against him. God declares that the just punishment for our sins is death and hell. However, God still loves us and, therefore, made the way for us to be reconciled back to him. He sent his Son, Jesus, to pay the punishment for our sins through his death on the cross. Jesus rose from the dead three days later, making reconciliation possible. When you repent (confess and turn away) from your sins and place your faith in Christ to save you from your sins, the blood of Jesus (symbolizing his atoning death and resurrection) will wash you clean, just as it has for this woman who has looked to Christ for salvation.

Artist’s Reflection:

“In him [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace…” (Ephesians 1:7)

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” (1 Peter 1:18-19)

What a glorious Savior we have in Jesus! Cleansing from sin and freedom from the burden of guilt is so easy to obtain, and God freely offers it to us through faith in Christ. All we need to do is simply repent (turn away) from our sins and ask Jesus to forgive us cleanse us. As we look to him in faith, trusting that his death on the cross has fully paid the punishment for our sins, we receive our cleansing and the burden of sin and guilt is removed.

This drawing features a woman, soaked black with her sin, confessing and looking up to Christ in faith for forgiveness. The blood of Jesus is running down her, cleansing her from her sin and removing her guilt. In its place, Christ is giving her a robe of his righteousness.

Sometimes we Christians struggle with condemnation over our sins even though the Bible declares that “…there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…” (Romans 8:1). The original inspiration for this drawing came as God was teaching me to continually look up to Christ for cleansing and not to allow myself to be weighed down with condemnation.

Sometimes when we are really battling with sin we can start to feel like our sins are bigger and greater than the blood of Christ. However, this is just a false feeling, not a Scriptural fact.

The truth of God’s Word is that the blood of Christ shed on Calvary for us is ALWAYS bigger and greater than our sins. The blood is completely sufficient to cleanse us from all of our sins!

“But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 5:20-21)

“…the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 1:7-2:2)

What a blessing it is to have our hearts sprinkled with the blood of Christ to cleanse us from a guilty conscience. What powerful Christians we become when we fully grasp that! “…you have set my heart free” (Psalm 119:32).

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:19-22)
