Death to self–to deny one’s self, to take up one’s cross and to follow Jesus is the way of the disciple of Christ. Jesus taught about this subject more than any other subject in the Scriptures. As we die to self, the spiritual fruit that is produced in our lives is greatly multiplied.
Artist’s Reflection:
“‘I [Jesus] tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life’” (John 12:24-25)
“…Jesus said…’For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:24-26)
Jesus tells us that if we want to find true ‘life’, we must give up our earthly ‘life’. This means we must wholly surrender our lives to the Lordship of Jesus.
Jesus was that one kernel of wheat, and by dying he brought many people to eternal life. Our own life is like a kernel of wheat, and now we must choose to follow Jesus’ example and die to ourselves in order to yield great spiritual fruit.
Allowing the Lord to put our desires to death is painful, but the rewards and the unsurpassed joy and peace that it yields in both this life and the next far outweighs any suffering we must go through.
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18)
