Intercessory Prayer is powerful! This intercessor is praying on his knees in alignment with God’s perfect will. As he intercedes, Jesus drives back the darkness. Through intercessory prayer, God’s kingdom shall come and his will shall be done on earth as it is in heaven. The imagery of Jesus as “the rider on the white horse” with his army of angels references Revelation 19:11-16, Christ’s Second Coming, when God’s kingdom will reign on earth.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4)
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Spiritual battle is constantly going on, whether it be over a soul, temptations or events in the world to name a few things. The Lord calls his people to join in the battle through intercessory prayer. Though I do not fully understand the spiritual realm, I know that as we pray and intercede fervently and in faith, God moves, and his army advances against the enemy.
One of the biggest tactics of the enemy is to convince us intercessory prayer is not powerful. However, the Lord promises us, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15).
This painting depicts an intercessor engaging in intercessory prayer. He is kneeling down on his face in prayer because he knows full well his own weaknesses and limitations. He is trusting in the omnipotent King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ, as he intercedes. Jesus is manifesting his victory in answer to the humble man’s prayer.
Jesus already won the victory on the cross 2000 years ago; therefore, he does not have to “re-win” battles again and again in our lives. He only needs to manifest them in answer to our prayers offered in faith. The red cross on the banner Jesus holds is a reminder that the war is already won, and wherever he rides forth he just simply declares his victory (confer Colossians 2:13-15). Though this intercessor may be in a completely hopeless situation according to his human vantage point, that is of no consequence to God, “For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)
“‘Everything is possible for him who believes.’” (Mark 9:23)
Though this painting is not a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ, I have drawn upon that imagery of his final manifest victory to illustrate his victories in our present day battles.
“I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron scepter.’ He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” (Revelation 19:11-16)
May we remember and take to heart the following Scriptures whenever we pray and intercede:
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18)
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said, ‘In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming!’
And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?’” (Luke 18:1-8)
“Then he [Jesus] said to them, ‘Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’
Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ ‘I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven given the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’” (Luke 11:5-13)
