When I first met Jesus, the mighty Lion of Judah, he delivered me from all of the darkness in my life. The only way I could think to artistically describe this experience was to draw Jesus as a powerful lion. Interestingly, as a new believer, I had not yet read in the Scriptures that Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5). After I learned this I thought, “Wow! I’ve already drawn a picture of the Lion of Judah and what he’s done in my life!”

Artist’s Reflection:

“Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah [Jesus], the Root of David, has triumphed.” (Revelation 5:5)

“The LORD roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem…” (Amos 1:2)

Our Lord Jesus is the mighty Lion of Judah roaring his victory over sin, death, hell and the devil and driving all darkness away!

The Spirit of the Lion of the tribe of Judah (the Holy Spirit) indwells us believers and fills us with great power, courage, strength and boldness against the Enemy and all darkness we encounter. The Spirit of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah also empowers us to boldly testify of the glory and victory of our Lord Jesus Christ, “…the righteous are as bold as a lion” (Proverbs 28:1).

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Before I first encountered Jesus Christ at age 18 my life was full of darkness. However, when I met Jesus and he filled me with the Holy Spirit, he “roared” that darkness out of my life! Praise God!!!! (See “Message“.)

At the time I was an art student at Drake University, and the only way I could think of how to visually describe such a powerful experience with God was to do Christ as a powerful, roaring lion. However, because I was such a young Christian at that time, I hadn’t yet read the Scripture where Jesus is called “The Lion of the Tribe of Judah” (Revelation 5:5). Later on, when I finally came across the verse, I was amazed and thought to myself, “Wow! I have already drawn a picture of the Lion of Judah roaring his victory in my life!”

“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13)

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.” (Romans 8:11)

These Lion of Judah drawings were featured on the covers of Geoff Waugh’s Lion of Judah series of books. The books describe the titles, reign, life, death, resurrection and Spirit of Jesus. Please see The Renewal Journal website for more information on the books.
